Terms of Service

In effect from September 25, 2026

These terms are an agreement between you and Civitas Technology ("Civitas", "we" or "us") for using Civitas: the website at cmty.app, the Civitas bots, the Civitas Relay and the Civitas objects in Second Life. By creating an account or using Civitas, you agree to them. Our Privacy Policy explains what we do with your information.

Who can use Civitas

To use Civitas you must:

• be at least 18 years old, and old enough to use Second Life under Linden Lab's rules;
• have a Second Life account in good standing, and link only avatars you control;
• follow Linden Lab's Terms of Service, Community Standards and Scripted Agent Policy, and, when you use Discord with Civitas, Discord's Terms of Service.

If you use Civitas for a group or organization, you agree to these terms for it too.

Your account

You sign in with a one-time code sent to your avatar in Second Life, a password, a passkey or a linked Discord account. Keep your password and passkeys safe: you're responsible for what's done with your account. If you think someone else has used it, change your password in Account settings, which signs you out everywhere else, and tell us.

One person, one account. Link your alternate avatars to it rather than making more accounts.

Communities

Whoever sets up a community on Civitas is its owner. Owners, and the managers they give roles to, decide what their community records and who can see it. They're responsible for:

• the rules of their community and the decisions they make, such as ejecting, banning or disciplining members;
• the permissions they give to others, and what those people do with them;
• having the right to manage the Second Life groups, Discord servers and land they connect to Civitas;
• handling their members' information.

We don't take part in communities' decisions or disputes between members. We may act when a community breaks these terms (see Suspending and ending).

Bots

Civitas does its work in Second Life through bots. There are three kinds:

• Civitas bots are ours. We're their operator under Linden Lab's Scripted Agent Policy, and a community using one gets a small daily message allowance.
• Civitas Relay bots run on your own computer through the Civitas Relay. Their passwords never leave your computer. You're the operator of the bot and responsible for the account.
• Hosted bots are Second Life accounts you own that you ask us to run for you. You give us permission to sign the account in and act as your community asks. You're still its owner and operator, and you can remove it from Civitas at any time. We keep its password encrypted and never show it to anyone, our staff included.

Linden Lab limits how many messages an operator's bots may send each day. Civitas counts every message and stops sending when a limit is reached, so some messages may wait until the next day. Bots can also be logged out or held up by Second Life itself. We can't promise that any message or in-world action happens, or happens by a given time.

What you can't do

Don't use Civitas to:

• break the law, Linden Lab's rules or Discord's rules;
• send spam, or harass, threaten or bully people;
• pretend to be someone else, or link or manage avatars, groups or servers that aren't yours to manage;
• get around residents' privacy settings, or collect information about residents beyond what Civitas features do;
• get around a ban, a suspension or a message limit, including by using more accounts;
• break into, overload, probe or disrupt Civitas, or use it in a way that harms other communities;
• copy Civitas objects or scripts, or make things that pretend to be them.

Your content

What you and your community put into Civitas stays yours. You give us permission to store, copy, show and send it only as needed to run Civitas for you: for example, to show your roles to your managers, or to post a message from Discord into group chat. You're responsible for having the right to share what you put in. We may remove content that breaks these terms or the law.

If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them without owing you anything. Civitas itself, its software, name and design, belongs to us.

Payments

Core is free for every community. Other modules, Civitas Relay subscriptions and hosted bots cost a weekly amount in Linden dollars (L$), shown before you turn them on. Until we switch billing on, everything is free.

• A community pays from a prepaid L$ balance, topped up at a Civitas payment terminal in Second Life.
• The balance can only be spent on Civitas. It isn't a deposit, earns no interest and can't be cashed out or moved to another community.
• When the balance runs out, paid modules pause and their data is kept until the balance is topped up or the community is deleted.
• L$ already spent aren't refunded. If we close Civitas or a paid feature for good, we'll refund the unused balance in L$.
• Nothing on Civitas pays interest, dividends or any other return on L$.

Communities can run their own in-character money. It's part of their roleplay, has no value outside Civitas, and in-character money that earns interest or trades on a market can't be bought with L$ or cashed out.

Linden Lab and Discord

Civitas is independent. It isn't affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Linden Research, Inc. (Linden Lab) or Discord Inc. Your use of Second Life is governed by Linden Lab's terms, and your use of Discord by Discord's. If either changes how their service works, some Civitas features may stop working, and we're not responsible for that.

Changes to Civitas and these terms

Civitas will keep changing: we may add, change or remove features. If we change these terms in a way that matters, we'll say so on Civitas before the change takes effect. If you keep using Civitas after that, the new terms apply. If you don't agree with them, stop using Civitas and you can ask us to delete your account.

Suspending and ending

You can stop using Civitas at any time, and ask us to delete your account (see Your rights in the Privacy Policy). A community's owner can delete their community.

We may suspend or close an account or community that breaks these terms, puts others at risk, or that the law requires us to act on. When we can, we'll tell you first and give you a chance to put things right. A suspended community's managers can still see its data but can't change it, and its bots stop sending. If a community is closed, its owner can ask for a copy of its data first, unless the law stops us.

No guarantees

We work hard to keep Civitas running and your data safe, but Civitas is provided "as is" and "as available". As far as the law allows, we don't promise that it will always be available, free of errors, or fit for a particular purpose.

Our liability

As far as the law allows, we're not liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost profits, lost data or lost in-world income, and our total liability to you for any claim about Civitas is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law doesn't allow us to limit.

If someone makes a claim against us because of how you used Civitas or broke these terms, you'll cover our reasonable costs of dealing with it, as far as the law allows.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, United States of America, and disputes are heard in its courts. If you live somewhere whose law gives you rights these terms can't take away, you keep them.

If part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce part of these terms straight away, we can still enforce it later.
