Set up your community
The setup guide creates your community and walks you through its SL groups, its bot, its Discord server and its roles.
Anyone with a Civitas account can create a community, and becomes its owner.
The setup guide takes you through the basics one step at a time. Every step after the first can be skipped, and each has its own page in the navigation for later.
Name your community
- Go to Your communities and press Create a community.
- Type your community's Name. Civitas suggests a Web address from it: your public page at cmty.app. You can change the address later.
- Press Create community.
You own the community and hold every permission in it. If more than one avatar signs in to your account, choose which one owns it.
Add your SL groups
Civitas works in your groups through a bot. The first time, press Use the shared Civitas bot: it's free, and it can send your community a small number of messages a day.
- In Second Life, open your group's profile and use Copy SLurl.
- Paste it into Group UUID or link and press Add group.
- Invite the bot into the group in SL, in a role with the abilities the list under the group shows. Civitas accepts the invitation as soon as it arrives. If anyone can join the group, press Have the bot join instead.
Once the bot is in, it reads the group's members and roles. Everyone in your groups becomes a member of your community.
No group yet? Under Or have Civitas create one, press Create a group, and Civitas creates it in SL and invites you and the bot. See Have Civitas create an SL group.
Choose your bot
The shared bot is fine to start with. Your own bot sends your community's messages under its own daily limit of 5,000 instead of the shared bot's small share. Civitas can host it for you, or you can run it on your own Windows PC with the Civitas Relay. Either way, it must be registered with Linden Lab as a scripted agent.
Add your Discord server
Press Add to a Discord server and pick the server you manage. Discord shows what Civitas can do there. Civitas then posts in the channels you choose, gives out linked roles and can pass your group chats to Discord.
Set up your roles
A role says what its holders can do in Civitas. Bring in the roles your SL groups and Discord server already have, or make new ones. A role linked to an SL group role or a Discord role is given out in all of them at once.
What's next
The last step suggests what communities often set up next: giving people roles, teams, a Terminal in SL, chat between SL and Discord, and your public page. The setup guide stays on the Settings page, and the overview shows Continue setting up until your community has its groups and roles.
