Understand the daily message limit

Linden Lab lets each bot operator send at most 5,000 messages a day, across all their bots. Civitas counts every message before a bot sends it, and never goes over.

Whose limit you're using

• The shared Civitas bot. Civitas is its operator, and each community gets a small share of its limit.
• Your own bot. You're its operator, so the 5,000 are yours, shared by all your bots in all your communities.

The count starts again at midnight SLT.

See how many are left

The top of the Bots page shows Messages today: how many have gone and how many you have, and when the count resets. Point at it to see whose limit it is. The bar turns amber as it fills, and red once it's used up.

What counts

• Each IM the bot sends counts one: a test IM, a notification your community sends by IM, or the Discord invite link after an invitation.
• Each invitation to an SL group counts one, including invitations from a Terminal.
• Chat passed into an SL group chat, from Discord or the website, counts once for each person it reaches.

Ejecting, banning, giving roles, changing a group's settings and reading its roster send no messages, so they don't count. Sign-in codes and the Terminal script come out of Civitas's own share, never your community's.

When they run out

Civitas doesn't ask the bot for anything that would go over. You see a message saying the daily limit is used up, or, on the shared bot, how many of its share your community has used today. In a list of invitations, the ones past the limit show Not done. Everything that sends no message keeps working.

Chat sync

Chat sync can't use your whole limit. Civitas keeps enough back for invitations, notices and IMs, going by what they needed on recent days, so they can still go out on a busy chat day. See chat sync.
