Choose your community's bot
Start with the shared Civitas bot, check that it works, and move to your own bot for the full daily limit.
You need permission to manage bots (bots.manage). Only the community's owner can add their own bot.
The bot does Civitas's work in SL: invites, ejects, bans and IMs. Every community has one, and you choose it on the Bots page.
Start with the shared bot
- Go to Bots.
- Under Choose a bot, press Use the shared Civitas bot.
The shared bot is free with Core, and it can send your community a small number of messages a day. See Understand the daily message limit.
Check that it works
This community's bot lists your bot, whether it's Online, Connecting, Offline or Failed, and the region it's in. Press Send me a test IM, and the bot IMs you in SL. It counts one message.
Recent jobs lists what the bots have done for your community, newest first: when each job was queued, which bot had it, and whether it Succeeded or Failed, with why. The page keeps itself up to date while it's open.
Use your own bot
Your own SL bot sends your community's messages under your own daily limit of 5,000 instead of the shared bot's small share. You're its operator, so its account must be registered with Linden Lab as a scripted agent. Only the community's owner sees Use your own bot. There are two ways:
- Hosted by Civitas. Type the Bot's SL username and Bot's SL password, and press Host this bot. It logs in within a minute and stays online even when your computer isn't. The password is encrypted as soon as you enter it: only Civitas's bot host can decrypt it, and nobody at Civitas can see it.
- On your computer, with the Civitas Relay. The Relay runs your bot on your own Windows computer, and its password never leaves it. See What the Civitas Relay is.
Both are free for now. Once billing opens, each will need a subscription.
Once your bot is online, Civitas uses it instead of the shared bot. Invite it into each of your SL groups too, in a role with the abilities Civitas needs. Once it's in a group, the shared bot leaves that group by itself.
Change or stop a hosted bot
- If the password changes, or the bot shows Failed because it was wrong, press Change password… beside it, type the New password and press Save.
- To stop, press Stop hosting…. Civitas logs the bot out and forgets its password, and jobs waiting for it fail. If no bot is left, the shared bot takes over.
