Create and change roles
Roles hold the permissions that decide what people can do in your community on Civitas; create them, change their permissions, and delete them on the Roles page.
You need permission to manage roles (roles.manage). Anyone who can see members (members.view) can see the Roles page.
Each role has a name, an optional description and a set of permissions. Everyone holding the role can do what its permissions allow. The community owner holds every permission without needing a role.
Create a role
- Go to Roles and press Create role.
- Type its Name. Two roles can't have the same name.
- Add a Description (optional). People given the role see it in their notification.
- Tick its Permissions. They're grouped by what they're about, like members or moderation.
- Press Create role.
You can only tick permissions you hold yourself. The others are greyed out, and pointing at one says You don't hold this permission.
Change a role
Press the role's name, or Edit at the end of its row. Changes save as you make them: a tick at once, the name and description when you leave the box.
You can only edit a role whose every permission you hold. For any other, Edit is greyed out and says It has permissions you don't hold.
Delete a role
Open the role and press Delete role… at the bottom. Everyone holding it loses it. If it's linked, the bot also deletes the SL group role, and Civitas deletes the Discord role. Civitas asks before it deletes anything. If SL can't delete the group role, Civitas says why and keeps the role; to delete it only on Civitas, unlink it first.
Find a role
The table shows each role's Linked to and Permissions. Use Show to list only roles Linked to an SL group, Linked to Discord, or Website only.
