Open and work a moderation case

A moderation case keeps everything about one avatar's trouble in one place: evidence, notes, warnings, bans, mutes and appeals.

You need permission to see cases (moderation.view) to read them, and to manage them (moderation.manage) to open, assign, add evidence and close them.

A case is about one avatar and is out of character (OOC). It can be about a member, a former member, or someone who was never in your groups. Cases are numbered, so your moderators can talk about "case 12".

Open a case

  1. Go to Moderation and press Open a case.
  2. Start typing the person's name and pick them. The list includes former members. For someone who was never a member, paste their avatar's UUID, or a link with it, under Or their avatar's UUID. Civitas shows whose avatar it is.
  3. Give it a Title, like what they did.
  4. Add a Summary (optional): what happened, where and when.
  5. Press Open case. The case opens.

A case also opens when someone who can manage cases accepts a moderator report sent on one of your forms. It's about the person reported, with each answer added as evidence, and links back to the report. An anonymous report says so, and nobody knows who sent it.

Find a case

On Moderation, type a name or avatar UUID in Find a case, and use Show for Open cases, Assigned to me, Not assigned, Closed cases or All cases. The Standing column marks cases where the person is Banned, an Appeal waiting, or a Ban suggested by your warning rule.

Look after a case

Press Take this case to look after it yourself, or Assign to choose someone who can manage cases. They get a notification, and see it under Assigned to me.

Add evidence

  1. On the case, press Add evidence.
  2. Type What happened, or paste chat. Tick This is a chat log to keep it exactly as pasted, line by line.
  3. To add a screenshot, press Upload a picture: PNG, JPEG, GIF or WebP, up to 5 MB.
  4. Press Add.

Evidence is listed oldest first and can't be changed or removed once it's added.

Keep notes

Moderator notes are for the people who handle cases: what you did, who you talked to, what's next. Type in Add a note and press Add note. Notes can't be changed once added, and only people who can see cases see them.

Close a case

Press Close case when it's done, and Reopen case if it isn't. Closing a case doesn't lift its bans or mutes. While a case is closed, you can't add evidence, warnings, bans or mutes to it. Edit changes its title and summary.
