Give someone a role
Give a member a role, or take one away, from the Members page or their profile, and Civitas passes the change on to SL and Discord where the role is linked.
You need permission to manage members (members.manage), and you must hold every permission in the role you give or take away.
A role says what its holders can do in Civitas. Giving someone a role is how you make them a manager, a moderator or anything else your roles describe.
Give a role
- Go to Members and find the person, or open their profile.
- Press the + after their roles. It lists the roles they don't hold yet.
- Pick the role. It's given straight away.
The person gets a notification, such as "You've been given the Moderator role", with the role's description if it has one.
Take a role away
Press the x on the role, beside its name. It's taken away straight away.
What can stop you
- Permissions you don't hold. Nobody can hand out more than they have: to give or take a role, you must hold every permission in it. The community owner holds every permission.
- Former members. Someone who left your groups can't be given a role.
- SL can't follow. If the role is linked to an SL group role, the bot makes the same change in the group, so it needs what that change needs on the group's page. When SL can't follow, Civitas doesn't make the change and says why.
Linked roles
When the role is linked to an SL group role or a Discord role, the change reaches them too:
- In SL, the bot gives or takes the group role. Someone who isn't in the group yet gets it when they join.
- On Discord, Civitas gives or takes the Discord role, once the person has linked their Discord account and is on your server.

Roles that come from a team
A team's rank can give a role. Putting someone at that rank gives it, and moving them off takes it away, so it's usually best to change their rank instead. If you take such a role away here, the team's roster says they don't hold it and offers Give it back. See Put people on a team.
