Pass chat between SL and Discord

Chat sync passes messages between your community's SL group chats and Discord channels. You set it up as bridges: what's said in any group chat or channel of a bridge shows in all the others.

Before you start

• Your SL groups. The bot has to be in a group before its chat can join a bridge. See Add your SL group.
• Your Discord server. Add Civitas to it on the Discord page. Civitas needs Manage Webhooks in the channels it posts in.
• The bot's ability to change the charter. Give the bot's role Change Charter, Insignia, and 'Show in search' in each group, so it can add chat sync's line to the charter (below).
• Your own bot, to post into SL. The shared Civitas bot only reads group chat, so with it, SL chat reaches Discord but nothing is posted into SL. To post there, add your own bot, hosted by Civitas or on the Civitas Relay.

Create a bridge

1. Go to Chat and press Create a bridge.
2. Give it a Name, like "Town chat".
3. Tick its SL group chats and Discord channels. If your community has more than one Discord server, pick the Server first.
4. Press Create bridge.

A bridge needs at least two group chats or channels between them. A group chat or a channel can be in one bridge only.

The line in the group's charter

Linden Lab's rules say people in SL must know when their chat is shared outside SL. So when a group's chat joins a bridge with Discord channels, the bot adds this line to the end of the group's charter:

This group's chat is shared to the community's Discord server by Civitas (cmty.app).

What's said in the group reaches Discord only while its charter has that line. If someone takes it out in SL, chat stops going to Discord the next time Civitas reads the group's settings, and the bridge says Not shared to Discord and why. Press Add the line to put it back. If the bot can't change the charter, add the line yourself in SL, or give the bot's role the ability. Messages between SL groups and from Discord into SL carry on either way.

How messages look

• In Discord, a message from SL shows under the speaker's SL name and profile picture. When a bridge has several groups, the name says which group it came from.
• In SL, a message from Discord starts with [D] and the writer's name. Someone who has linked their Discord account shows by their SL name.
• Between groups, a message starts with the group it was said in, in brackets.

The bot posts into a group's chat only while it's in that chat with someone.

Messages and the daily limit

Each post into a group's chat counts once for everyone in that chat, against your bot's daily messages. A small chat group costs less than a big main group. Sent into SL today shows how much chat sync has used of its share; the rest is kept for invites, notices and IMs.

When the share is used up, posting into SL pauses until midnight SLT. The bridge says Posting into SL paused until that time, and Civitas posts a notice in the bridge's channels. What's said in SL still reaches Discord.

Change or remove a bridge

Press Edit on the bridge. Changes save as you make them: ticks at once, the name when you leave the box. Remove… stops messages passing between its group chats and channels. You can create it again later.
